A Horses natural cooling mechanisim is to sweat.  If a horse is unable to sweat in a normal manner, preformance and vital bodily functions are affected.

Inability to sweat normally is called Anhydrosis (non-sweating syndrome, dry coat, or "puffs").  Generally speaking both high humidity and high temperatures are require for the condition to manifest.  It is therefore a very common condition in horses in tropical and sub-tropical regions.  Incidences of this condition vary from ~3% of horses in temperate climates to up to 20% of horses in tropical climates, and would appear to be more prevalent on Thoroughbred and Part Thoroughbred horses.

Anhydrosis is a serous condition which presents with the following symptoms:

  • the inability to sweat, even with severe exercise. Early in the course of the disease sweating is generally restricted to the throat, neck, base of ears, between the hind legs and under the saddle, but progresses in many cases to a complete cessation of sweating,
  • high body temperatures, particularly after exercise leading to fever.
  • a marked excessive breathlessness or panting/ puffing,
  • fatigue,
  • a dry harsh coat,
  • generally in poor condition,
  • alopecia (hair loss), particularly in the head region,
  • excessive urinate  - as they are not losing fluid by sweating,
  • inappetance andweight loss can often be observed,
  • many affected horses also exhibit varying degrees of shifting lameness due to disintegration of hoof walls following cracks on the coronary band.

While anhydrosis is typically associated with heavy exercise, it has also reported in resting stabled horses and brood mares.  Care should be taken to observe pre-disposed horses through the hotter months even while resting

Dosage and Administration
Mix 25 g (one level measure) with feed twice daily. Depending on severity of anhydrosis, a positive response can generally be expected in 3 - 21 days after commencement of daily administration of SWET electrolyte powder.
