Harpagophytum procumbens, also called grapple plant, wood spider and most commonly Devil's Claw, is a plant of the sesame family, native to South Africa. It got its name from the peculiar appearance of its hooked fruit.
The plant's large tuberous roots are used medicinally to reduce pain and fever, inflammation, and to stimulate digestion.
It can be so effective that you must be careful not to mask other symptoms.
If you are getting massage work done on your horse ensure your therapist is aware you are using Devils Claw Root, as it may dull some spasms and painfull sites may be missed.
Avoid using this herb on pregnant mares or horses that may be suffering from gastric ulcers.
